Biography in Sound was an hour-long documentary radio program that was produced and broadcast in the 1950s. It's one of the best examples of radio excellence - the production is exemplary and I find every episode to be compelling. It's one of my favorites; I don't understand why it isn't more well known! Each episode featured multiple guests, who often were peers or friends of the person who was the featured subject. For example, the show on Hemingway features Mickey Spillane, Gary Cooper, Al...

The NBC program WORDS AT WAR is one of my very very favorite old time radio shows. I don't have all episodes available (disabled & can't afford to buy OTR), but here are the episodes that I do have. Enjoy. :D Correct episode names are from the helpful Digital Deli OTR site: http://www.digitaldeliftp.com/DigitalDeliToo/dd2jb-Words-At-War.html Additional research is my own, though I ran out of steam. :) About the Episodes *****EPISODE 01: 1943-06-24 NBC Words At War 01 Combined Operations The...

The Jubilee! radio show was broadcast on the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) and featured "Negro" performers. The dates on these files, show numbers, as well as some performer's names, came from the Jubilee! transcription pages by Carl Hallstrom & Bo Scherman: http://home.swipnet.se/dooji/jubilee.htm The Radio Gold Index http://www.radiogoldindex.com DB was helpful too. G.I. Jive was a 15-minute music program that was produced & broadcast by the U.S. government via the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) radio network. Early shows had a variety of hosts: Frank Nelson, Lester Jay, and popular pin-up girls like Donna Reed were guest DJs. In 1943, G.I. Jill (Martha Wilkerson) took over behind the mike, and according to the AFRTS Archive blog, G.I. Jive became the most popular show on AFRS. During WWII the government produced and distributed 78 RPM "Victory Discs," or V-Discs, to U.S. troops all over the world. The records were to be destroyed after the war but many of them survived. :) A lot of the V-Disc material was taken from radio programs like Command Performance; you can find out more in the book V-Discs: A History and Discography by Richard Sears. Martha Wilkerson (AKA G.I. Jill) hosted a couple shows on the United States government-produced Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). One program she hosted was G.I. Jive (http://archive.org/details/AfrsG.i.Jive) and another was Jill's All-Time Jukebox, which ran concurrent to the other show during part of its run (she mentions it during G.I. Jive). Also see The Army-Navy Screen Magazine 55 (1945) here on Archive.org. I only have 5 Jill's All-Time Jukebox shows :( but there are some real gems....

The show aired for an an initial series of episodes and the audience response was so positive, the show returned for "Round 2." Proudly We Hail was a syndicated Cold War / JET AGE! / Korean War-era radio program that was produced by the US government to promote Army, WAC, and Air Force recruitment. It featured radio dramas in a variety of genres - SciFi, patriotic, true stories, biographical, etc. It was also broadcast on AFRS. Some of these files suffered from that curious practice (that some companies that sell OTR have undertaken) of slightly slowing down the speed of the broadcast. It lengthens the episode length...

The Eisenhower Years was a 13-part radio documentary that was produced by Kansas State University in 1969 & 1970. According to Kansas Cooperative Extension Service History, 1914-1989, "It was aired over the K-State Radio Network, the National Educational Radio Network (the fore-runner of National Public Radio), and the Voice of America." I've tagged these files with "1970" & "VOA." Any typo or error is mine. :)

America Looks Abroad was a 15-minute news and commentary show produced by the nonpartisan American Foreign Policy Association (FPA.org) and broadcast on NBC. ...sounds boring but this show aired 1939 through May of 1941 (according to Otrpedia), which was when the USA was grappling with neutrality, lend lease etc. so.... NPR has said that Vox Pop was the first "Quiz Show" but that was sort of peripheral to the show, which was produced in a different location each week. It billed itself as the "premier audience participation show" and now these short interviews provide a keyhole glimpse into the era in which it was created. V-Discs 900-903 (1949) During WWII the government produced and distributed 78 RPM "Victory Discs," or V-Discs, to U.S. troops all over the world. The records were to be destroyed after the war but many of them survived. :) A lot of the V-Disc material was taken from radio programs like Command Performance; you can find out more in the book V-Discs: A History and Discography by Richard Sears. Polio outbreaks in the United States in the summer of 1946 were at an all-time high. In Minneapolis, Minnesota there was a voluntary quarantine - and with no newspaper delivery boys there was no Sunday Funnies. Mayor (and future Vice President) Hubert H. Humphrey came to the rescue and read the Sunday comics over WCCO (and did a pretty good job). There is more about the Stay At Home Campaign and this broadcast at the Minneapolis Star Tribune: http://www.startribune.com/local/blogs/116452338.html
